Some of you may have been wondering why I haven't posted anything for a while.
( I mean, my upload schedule has never been very consistent but last year was exceptionally crappy in that regard. Sorry. ) The reason in a nutshell: 2020 & depression. Need I say more?
Aw heck! I do, actually...
-The colorful elephant in the room: RWBY. Oof. I'm honestly kind of apathetic towards the show at the moment. You might think the current volume would have inspired me to draw more RWBY stuff but... sadly, no. I do have a couple of drawings planned and also three
long-ish Cinder Shark adventures I still haven't posted but other than that, it's difficult to say how much more fan art I'll be able to make of this series. "A Broken Promise" is still on the table despite Cinder finally getting a canon backstory and I am still planning to continue this comic in the future!
-When They Cry....
My fiancée and I recently read through Umineko together and we're currently reading Higurashi. I am obsessed with these VNs right now and will definitely draw some fan content of my favorite characters. ~
- As I've mentioned before, I spent a vast majority of 2020 scripting a looooong, original story with tons of worldbuilding "Knight and the Morning Star", but also a shorter slice of life/mystery comic that I haven't named yet.
Both of those I'm supposed to start drawing and posting this year. I'll start with the shorter one, I think.
-I just finished cranking out the English translation of "Bloodorable", an improvised comic about evil magical girls that a group of fellow artists and I have been working on since 2016. Once the first chapter has been published on Tapas, I'll share a link here in case some of you might be interested in seeing magic, gore, foul language and nonsense on full display.
That's all for today, take care, everyone!
I've been writing a script for the ”original” comic I mentioned in my last journal post. I say ”original” because its roots are in an improvised webcomic my friends and I started drawing in 2014 but since I got the permission to do whatever I please with the characters and story, it has become its own thing with some familiar elements from the original ”Forever Ago”
(These lovely, skilled artists will be credited in the description once I start posting some pages.)
There's still a lot of work left to be done before I can start drawing and posting the comic itself but if everything goes as planned, you'll see the first few pages in January.
Trying to come up with a brand new title has been difficult, but at least for now the project shall be called
So if you're interested in knights, magic, demon booty and the wonderfully e v i l g a y s
then maybe you'll find this weird-ass misadventure entertaining. This is not the official plot summary.
That's right ~ There will be even more adventures of Cinder Shark and her aquatic friends next year!
This series has melted my cold, dark void of a heart and now I can't stop drawing shark comics. Halp.
(No need for intervention, this is fine. I'm fine. My shark fins are fine. Go get yourself some chicken nuggets and enjoy the madness.)
It has been a while since the last part, hasn't it?
Don't worry, I'm still working on it. Sorry for the long wait. I've had the first part (page 3) almost done for months now but I've redrawn the second part (page 4)
4 times and I simply can't get any of the panels to look right for whatever reason.
I'm starting to think this page is cursed. o__o Maybe 5th time's the charm!
I sure do love my evil one-sided, tragic, mostly platonic/ambiguous relationship. I really do.
But there's only so much one can do with the idea when the source material only gives you little droplets to work with until it doesn't anymore.
That's the situation right now. No drops of Emberald in sight in the world of RWBY.
Unless the show does a full 180 and hands me the biggest tank of shipping fuel known to man to fly my ship to the moon and beyond, there will be no more Emberald comics from me.
Except for this one comic that takes place during volume 6 that I never finished. Hmmmmmm.
This one's in such a weird spot right now, since none of the character designs here match Volume 7. If I wanted to do this story correctly,
I'd have to explain every single thing that went differently after volume 5 ended and then add a couple of volumes worth of made up stuff to the exposition dump.
Since I'm about to start my original comic project very soon, it's very unlikely that I'd be able to pull that off in a reasonable time.
Basically we'd all be 70 before it's done.
To continue this comic, I will have to cut out the exposition, leave most of the past events untold and just focus on the set up and fight between our heroes and Emerald.
And then just end the story once the fight is over. We'll see how that plan goes. If it doesn't work, then RIP
Allow me to offer you a long, rambling explanation:
January 23, 2017 was the day I suddenly stopped drawing Tale of the Snow Queen and went on an indefinite hiatus.
So almost three years have passed and I finally sat down and re-read the comic.
Instead of feeling excitement about rekindling an old project I loved drawing so very much, something felt off.
Yes, the horribly outdated art style of TOTSQ has bothered me for a while but that wasn't the only issue. The fault lies with the story itself.
Sometimes you really need time to reflect on your writing and only then can you see the cracks in the pretty picture.
The biggest crack being the love triangle between Lydia, Gerda and Kai. Especially the whole ”love spell” Lydia inflicted on Kai and that being the origin of Elsa. THE Elsa of Arendelle.
What I'm saying is that I can think of several different ways that hot mess of a love triangle could've been executed and I chose the one that, in hindsight, feels wrong for the story I was trying to tell.
This may not be a huge issue to everyone out there but I honestly don't feel comfortable continuing the comic in its current state even if there are some decent things about it.
This is why a script or at least an outline is necessary. I never wrote one for this comic, just went with the flow. Sadly, it shows.
My inspiration is also currently elsewhere. Even with Frozen 2 around the corner, this story just hasn't been on my mind lately.
What I might try at some point, is rewrite the entire story from start to finish and turn it into a piece of literature with a few key illustrations and additional scenes here and there.
Like an actual fanfic with drawings and stuff? How does that sound?
Although English is not my first language and this would be my very first attempt at writing an entire fanfic in English so what could possibly go wrong?
I need to stop writing these at night. x___X Take care, everyone! Hugs and chicken nuggets ~
